History of Ripley Heritage’s Association with The Ohio Historical Society/Ohio History Connection
Ripley’s historical organization, Ripley Heritage, Inc. was informed by the Ohio Historical Society that due to declining funds Rankin House would be closed. This occurred in 1981 soon after the formation of the Ripley Heritage organization. A group of citizens asked to meet with Dr. Gary Ness, Director of OHS, with a proposal to keep the site open.
Rankin House, owned by The Ohio Historical Society, was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1997 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a member of the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program of the National Park Service.
