It All Started with the River – Ripley’s First Historic Mural
Ripley has a new landmark to celebrate! The “It All Started with the River” mural, painted by mural artist Pam Kellough, now graces Bristow Pharmacy’s building at 100 Main Street which is the main intersection in Ripley. Several historic byways pass by this main intersection: The Ohio Scenic Byway, The Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail and Brigadier General Charles Young Memorial Historical Corridor.
The Village of Ripley has a proud abolitionist history where our citizens helped thousands of slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. This mural shares this and other great aspects of our history as well as the role the river has always played in shaping our village. With vibrant colors and rich detail, the artwork honors our past and our future.

The Process:
The mural took 10 days to complete and was made possible for by the support of community donations both by residents and local organizations. We also received generous grants from the Ohio Arts Council ($8, 706.00) and Duke Energy ($2,500.00). From the earliest sketches to the final brush strokes, this project reflects the spirit of collaboration that defines Ripley. We extend heartfelt thanks to every individual that donated to help us create this mural, to the Ripley Lions Club, The Ripley Women’s Club, Bristow Pharmacy, Lewis Laundry Stop, Suite C Beauty Bar, NGOgro, LLC, Ripley RISE, and Ripley Economic Development, Inc.
